Poject Discussion Forum Rules
This is a new section of where you guys can discuss other users cars. There are just a few rules that need to be followed for this forum to stay nice, clean and easy to use:

1. ONE thread per car. Search the forum for an existing thread before starting your own, things stay tidy that way.
2. Try and stay on topic if you can.
3. Thread titles must be in this format: Username's and the car project

I have created this section so it keeps the build diarys clean and allows the builder of the car to keep us updated a bit like a BLOG so please use this section to disscuss the builders cars and we should see a much easier forum to navigate.

That sounds like a good plan, I am sure in standard form the SR20DE will have enough power to have some fun with, and can easily swap later to the VE version.
Pretty sure the block and everything is the same, just the heads are different, and maybe the pistons and rods, Dave will know?

Yea they are very similar, but being fwd they aren't a direct swap, all the RWD engine mount bosses are there on the block they just need to be drilled and tapped, and the starter is on the other side so 2 new mounts need to be made on the gearbox bell housing, not too hard and wouldn't be expensive at all. the gains from doing this will be a 100 times cheaper than trying to chase similar power out of the DE. Oh and if you feel like that's not enough, kelford do a cam profile that should bump power to well over 200 rwhp with a couple of extra bolt ons. Btw the head with a small amount of work can flow 320hp, so really heaps haha

I've been offered an sr20de from a crash damaged s14 with 80,000 on the clock, a turbo gearbox, new clutch (heavy duty apparently) and the rest for $1500. I would need to ship it down here though. Thoughts?

Sounds pretty, as long as it comes with all the loom and ecu and sensors etc.

As for postage talk to Mark, he has moved a few engines around the country, and will know the best company for the job.

You'd be better off with the CA18DET... smaller, lighter and much greater power potential.

Down the track I still want to fix up an sr20ve for rwd, and tidy it up then drop it in, but I'm just making sure plan b (not get around to the swap) puts the car in a good place too. It seems like a good starting point for the money down. Similar power to the mazda after some tuning, but lighter as I understand? And the lowest k's motor I've ever had (not counting the unused heavy one of course :D)

I would have a good look at the sr20 from the s14 as you may find it is the variable valve timing version. I have an SR20DE from an S15 and it has it despite the engine being labeled an SR20DE. I suppose I am biased but the SR20 would be a better choice than anything else you have considered. It should have plenty of power, it is already RWD, has a good gearbox, are well known for their strength and reliability and are a favourite with the boy racers so there are plenty of upgrade parts.

hey,
The s14 and 15 DE's have variable valve timing, but its only on the intake cam and it only changes the timing, not the lift, and duration as the VE does. As for a CA, sure in turbo format its ok, but it would get punished hard in N/A by the SR20VE. If the DE is complete, with EVERYTHING, then its a good buy, but otherwise keep looking, as it will cost heaps to track down little parts you may need.

Yeah I'm only looking at complete ones, I've made that mistake before. The flywheel game for the holden was expensive. Even after I got the new flywheel, I still had to take the motor apart again for balancing. Then get a different starter... I have learned that one by now :) I would have saved so much money had these forums existed when my project began all that time ago...
